Dhurandhar 2: Propaganda Ya Sirf Film? Why Ranveer Singh’s Blockbuster Has Turned Into A Political War

    Dhurandhar 2

Dhurandhar 2, also referred to in coverage as Dhurandhar: The Revenge, is very much a real film release, not just a political slogan or online rumor. It released in theatres on 19 March 2026, stars Ranveer Singh, is directed by Aditya Dhar, and has already crossed roughly ₹450 crore in India within four days, according to Economic Times coverage. At the same time, it has also become the center of a sharp public fight over whether it is just a patriotic action thriller or a piece of political propaganda.

That split is exactly why the debate blew up. On one side, the film is being celebrated for scale, action, performances, and box office records. On the other, critics and some political voices say parts of it push a selective political message, especially through its treatment of state power and policy events like 2016 demonetisation.

So, is Dhurandhar 2 propaganda or a film?

The most accurate answer is: it is definitely a film, and whether it is propaganda is a matter of interpretation.

There is solid recent reporting that it is a commercially released feature film with a mainstream theatrical run, celebrity reactions, and massive collections.

But there is also real controversy around its messaging. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav reportedly called it “paid propaganda” and alleged it was designed to defame opposition parties. Separately, viewers and commentators have accused the movie of glorifying demonetisation and presenting a politically loaded version of events, which fueled the propaganda charge even more.

So this is not a fake controversy. It is a genuine political and cultural argument around a real film.

Why are people calling it propaganda?

The biggest controversy appears to be the film’s handling of demonetisation-era scenes and its broader political tone. Reports say some viewers felt the movie portrays the 2016 note-ban decision as an almost heroic anti-terror masterstroke, which critics argue is one-sided and politically convenient. That is one of the main reasons the “propaganda” label took off online.

The political heat rose further after Akhilesh Yadav’s public attack, where he described the film as “paid propaganda.” That moved the debate from film criticism into direct party-political territory.

There are also reports that the CBFC intervened with edits related to controversial portions, which suggests at least some parts of the film were considered sensitive enough to need cuts before or around release.

Why are others defending it as just a film?

Supporters say critics are overreacting and that films are allowed to take a viewpoint. Recent coverage shows figures like Ram Gopal Varma publicly defending Dhurandhar 2 against propaganda claims, essentially arguing that disagreement with a film’s message does not stop it from being cinema.

Industry praise has also been loud. Jaya Prada, Alia Bhatt, Shankar, and others praised the film’s ambition, performances, and scale, while the box office response suggests audiences are not rejecting it as pure political messaging.

In other words, defenders are saying: a movie can be ideological, provocative, even politically slanted, and still be a film first.

What is Dhurandhar 2 actually about?

The recent coverage consistently describes it as a large-scale spy/action/revenge drama led by Ranveer Singh, with a dark, intense, brutal tone and big spectacle-driven staging. Reports also mention that the film mixes real-world references with fictionalized drama, which is often exactly the kind of blend that generates “propaganda vs cinema” arguments.

Its action team has even said only about 60% of the planned brutality made it into the final film, which gives you a sense of the movie’s intended intensity and cinematic excess.

Chronology of the controversy about Dhurandhar 2

In the days before release, the film was already building huge momentum, with reports about record-breaking demand and even replacing the long-running DDLJ slot at Maratha Mandir.

It released on 19 March 2026 and quickly became a box-office monster.

Within days, online debate intensified over the film’s political messaging, especially its demonetisation scenes, and coverage described viewers calling it propaganda.

By 23 March 2026, the controversy had gone fully political, with Akhilesh Yadav attacking the film and Ram Gopal Varma publicly defending it.

Legal and censorship angle: Dhurandhar 2

From the reporting available, the main legal-ish issue here is not that the film has been banned or declared unlawful, but that it has faced censorship scrutiny and edits through the CBFC process. That means the present dispute is more about certification, representation, and political criticism than about any court finding that the movie is illegal propaganda.

Legally, Indian films can absolutely face criticism for political bias without crossing into something unlawful. The real threshold usually becomes whether content violates certification norms, defames a specific person unlawfully, or triggers other actionable legal harms. Based on the latest reporting I found, this debate is still mainly a public and political argument, not a final courtroom verdict.

    Angles people are missing

One weirdly important detail is that controversy may actually be helping the film Dhurandhar 2. The same movie being called propaganda by critics is also being hailed as “historic” by supporters, and that clash has probably made it even more viral. That’s an inference, but it fits the film’s explosive four-day run and nonstop media attention.

Another angle: the question “propaganda or film?” is a bit of a trap, because those categories are not mutually exclusive. Some of the most debated films in history were still unquestionably films. The sharper question is whether Dhurandhar 2 uses cinema to push a political message strongly enough that audiences feel manipulated. The current public reaction suggests a lot of people think it does.

A movie that replaced the long-held DDLJ Maratha Mandir slot, which became a symbolic headline-making record of its own. Its Day 1 India total was around ₹145–146 crore including previews, making it one of the biggest openings ever for a Hindi film.
